How does the RSA securid hack of defense contractors impact my business?

David just posted another article on his blog about the continued security problems occurring at defense contractors.

Although it is aimed at military and government intelligence, it brings up important points for all businesses, not just government and military. In light of the many thefts at Sony and hacks of other businesses (PBS), what is your business doing to safeguard your data?

For far too many companies, security is an afterthought. As a business manager or owner, you must ask yourself if you are doing enough, and what would happen if all your internal data was suddenly everywhere. Are you simply trusting your security to luck, or to a company located in another country, or to someone within your company who really doesn’t want the job?

At Thunderpaw, we work with companies to help them overcome these security openings. Can anyone prevent every single hack? No. But steps can be taken, that reduce risks.

Key questions:
1) are you following basic security protocols, restricting access to data including backups?
2) is your physical storage reasonably secure?
3) are you storing too much data?
4) are you collecting data just to collect it?
5) is your corporate infrastructure dependent on 3rd parties? how is that security?
6) how do you handle disposal of old computer systems, phones, paper, etc?
