History of Inis Glas Hedge School

Inis Glas Thoir is based in MD. It is a developing study group using a taped educational series of the Inis Glas Hedge School, plus material written by other Inis Glas members. The group is facilitated by John Machate, owner of this website and student of the founder of Inis Glas.

The Inis Glas Hedge School was founded in 1993 by Erynn Rowan Laurie and Lorax. It was set up as a tool for teaching a system of Neoceltic Paganism, see the related article called "Aurrad" on this site. After several versions of a lesson plan the final form of teaching became 18 hours video tape with over 600 pages of printed material. The "school" finally folded when all the original tapes became too damaged to copy and most of the copies have disappeared.

Inis Glas still functions at local levels (WA, MD and CA) and as a private e-mail list. Most of the material on this site is written by current and former members of Inis Glas. The basic ritual format is the one developed by the Inis Glas founders based on the material available to us from textual and archealogical sources. Not all of the information on this site is "factual," some is inspired keeping the spirit of the Celts in mind before adding it to our system.
